THROUGH THE VALLEY

OpenAI has officially launched Atlas, a new web browser built right on top of ChatGPT. Now the assistant can literally see what you’re looking at and take actions on websites using automated agent-style workflows. This comes after months of hints from OpenAI adding browsing and memory to ChatGPT. Atlas basically wraps all of that into one native browser experience.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • ChatGPT sits in a sidebar and works across whatever webpage you’re on

  • It can remember how you browse and use that to tailor replies or even automate stuff you do often

  • It can see the page you’re on and guide you right in a side chat (way quicker than screenshotting stuff into ChatGPT)

  • ChatGPT can auto-click, move around sites, and finish actions for you (Plus and Pro users get this now)

  • It can watch YouTube videos live and break them down in real time

  • The new tab page lets you search, summarize, compare, and research without jumping to other tools

  • It’s out now on macOS for Free, Plus, Pro, Go, Business (beta), Enterprise, and Edu users. Windows, iOS, and Android versions are on the way

Atlas runs on Chromium (same engine as Chrome and Edge), so it feels familiar like using Chrome, but with ChatGPT baked right in and acting as an actual agent. Chromium itself contains roughly 36 million lines of code, giving Atlas a mature foundation from day one. In fact, building a full-scale browser engine from scratch can be even more challenging than developing a new AI model (unless we’re talking GPT-level power).

So yeah, Atlas is basically a Chromium browser infused with ChatGPT Agent powers (kind of like Perplexity’s Comet), but with deeper OpenAI integration.

Why does it matter?

This move sets the stage for three major shifts:

  • Head-to-head competition with Google in search and discovery. Alphabet’s stock actually dropped after the news.

  • Huge potential for OpenAI to make money through ads and automated shopping, entering the browser game could unlock Google/Meta-level revenue.

OpenAI has now:

OpenAI, which started as a nonprofit, is quickly turning into the core backbone of global tech infrastructure.

On top of that, they’ve quietly hired over 100 ex–Wall Street bankers from firms like Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Morgan Stanley. Under a project called “Project Mercury,” contractors are getting paid $150/hour to train ChatGPT on financial modeling using real prompts and building Excel-style models for IPOs, mergers, and restructurings.
