MAIN SCOOP

1/ OpenAI’s next big project “Orion” 🔮

A new report from The Information reveals that OpenAI is developing two advanced AI models:

  • "Strawberry," which can solve complex unseen math problems, tackle challenging word puzzles, and even perform tasks that require strategic thinking.

  • and "Orion," set to be OpenAI's next flagship language model, which aims to surpass GPT-4's capabilities.

Why is Strawberry important for Orion?

Rather than launching "Strawberry" directly, OpenAI uses it to generate high-quality synthetic data to train Orion. This helps reduce errors or "hallucinations" in Orion’s outputs, ensuring it learns from accurate examples.

When will these models be available?

OpenAI is aiming to integrate Strawberry into ChatGPT as early as fall 2024. Meanwhile, Orion is still developing, with Strawberry providing key training data.

Is Orion the official name for GPT-5?

While Orion is expected to be the successor to GPT-4, OpenAI hasn’t officially confirmed it as GPT-5.

2/ Google drops much improved Gemini models 📉✨

Google has unveiled new experimental Gemini models: the smaller Gemini 1.5 Flash-8B and updated versions of Gemini 1.5 Pro and 1.5 Flash (from 0801 to 0827).

How do the new models perform?

  • Gemini 1.5 Flash 0827: This model has risen significantly, now ranking 6th on the LMSYS chatbot arena, tying with Claude 3.5 Sonnet and similar to GPT-4o mini.

  • Gemini 1.5 Pro 0827: Retains the 2nd spot on the LMSYS chatbot arena, showing slight improvements over the 0801 version and demonstrating strong gains in math, coding, and complex prompts.

  • Gemini 1.5 Flash 8B: Ranked 27th on the LMSYS chatbot arena, outperforming Gemma 9B and LLaMA3 70B. Despite its lower rank, it is still effective for building both simple and complex agents.

You can test all these models here.

3/ China’s robot conference unveils cutting-edge humanoid robots 🤖

The World Robot Conference in Beijing unveiled over 27 humanoid robot models and showcased around 600 cutting-edge products over five days.

Let’s review some key ones that stood out:

  • Astribot S1: It is a humanoid assistant robot that demonstrated abilities like calligraphy skills besides tasks like folding a shirt or pouring wine into a glass.

  • NAVIAI: This humanoid robot has been designed to adapt to a quasi-human nature and displayed skills like delivering a speech, making tea, and playing chess.

  • Agibot: Agibot is a robotics startup that revealed five new robots capable of delivering during the WRC 2024. Additionally, these robots can perform as sales personnel and gallery guides.

  • Wanda: Designed by a Japanese company, Wanda is a dual-arm humanoid robot butler that functions as a home service bot, helping with household chores like laundry and cooking.
