OPENAI
🧬 OpenAI is trying to extend human life
OpenAI has teamed up with biotech startup Retro Biosciences to develop GPT-4b micro, a language model focused on biological data, with the aim of extending human lifespan by 10 years.
Here's what you need to know:
The GPT-4b micro model tries to re-engineer proteins—a specific set called the Yamanaka factors—that can turn human skin cells into young-seeming stem cells.
It has been trained on vast amounts of protein sequence data and how these proteins interact, offering a unique approach compared to Google’s AlphaFold, which focuses on predicting protein structures.
Similar to how ChatGPT generates sentence suggestions, this AI model proposes new variations of proteins for researchers to test in the lab, guided through “few-shot” prompts.
Preliminary results show that the model’s protein variants could outperform human-designed ones, with up to 50-fold improvements in two proteins, though further scientific validation is needed.
Why it matters:
This is in line with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s recent statement that AI can “massively accelerate scientific discovery and innovation,” bringing the company closer to achieving its goal of creating artificial general intelligence (AGI). It's also worth noting that Sam Altman has invested $180 million in Retro Biosciences, highlighting the growing interest in longevity science.

SIDE UPDATES
Perplexity AI has reportedly pitched a merger with TikTok US. Instead of a traditional buyout, this move would create a whole new company, allowing ByteDance investors to keep their shares. What’s in it for Perplexity? Access to TikTok’s massive library of diverse video content, which could give their AI search engine a huge edge.
VLC Media Player is rolling out a new feature that uses AI to generate subtitles directly on your device. This local processing means subtitles can be created even offline, ensuring privacy and convenience. The AI transcribes audio in real-time, supports over 100 languages, and works for both live and pre-recorded videos.
Sam Altman has scheduled a closed-door meeting with U.S. government officials on January 30, fueling speculation about a groundbreaking AI announcement. Industry insiders suggest unveiling “PhD-level” super-agents: advanced AI tools capable of handling complex tasks like coding and financial analysis with human-like precision.
Microsoft is testing an AI-powered search feature for Windows 11, designed to make finding files more intuitive. Users can locate local files using natural language commands, such as “Show me last week’s presentations.” This feature, currently exclusive to Copilot Plus PCs, works offline and supports multiple file formats. Future updates will expand its capabilities to include cloud data, such as files stored in OneDrive.
UBTech, a humanoid robot maker from Shenzhen, has teamed up with Foxconn to use its Walker S1 robots in iPhone assembly. The robots will take on tasks like quality inspections, handling parcels, and assembling components. UBTech has already completed training for logistics tasks at Foxconn’s factories and plans to expand the robots’ use to Foxconn’s EV factory.
Nepenthes, a newly developed tool, aims to disrupt AI web crawlers by generating endless fake pages filled with random text. These pages trap crawlers in an infinite loop, draining their resources and potentially corrupting training data. However, Nepenthes impacts all web crawlers, including legitimate search engines, and may drive up server costs for developers.
CHATBOT
🤖 World's first chatbot ELIZA revived after 60 years
After 60 years of dormancy, the world’s first chatbot ELIZA has been revived by AI historians and computer scientists on its original operating system, bringing a piece of computing history back to life.
Here's what you need to know:
ELIZA was created in the 1960s by MIT professor Joseph Weizenbaum to simulate conversation, famously imitating a psychotherapist and encouraging users to keep talking.
In 2021, researchers discovered the original ELIZA code in MIT's archives, including the complete DOCTOR script, which enables the chatbot to mimic Rogerian psychotherapy techniques.
Reviving ELIZA was a complex process. The team had to deal with 2,600 lines of code with little documentation and run the program on a simulated IBM 7094 computer.
Despite these obstacles, the team restored 96% of the original code, uncovering hidden features like a "teaching mode" that lets users to modify ELIZA's behavior by adding new rules and responses.
The restored code is now available on GitHub, allowing anyone to explore ELIZA’s groundbreaking natural language processing and its historical role in AI development.
Why it matters:
The revival of ELIZA brings attention to the early foundations of AI, highlighting its lasting influence on modern systems like ChatGPT. While it may lack the sophistication of today’s models, ELIZA was groundbreaking for its time, laying the groundwork for natural language processing and shaping how AI understands and interacts with humans.
