AI Robot for Home: 1X NEO Gamma Debuts

Norwegian robotics company 1X has introduced Neo Gamma, a next-generation humanoid prototype designed for home use, following the Neo Beta model launched in August.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Neo Gamma has a softer, more approachable design with a knitted nylon suit to minimize injury risks and enhance flexibility. It now moves with a natural human gait, can squat to pick up objects, and sits in chairs.

  • The robot can perform household tasks like making coffee, doing laundry, and vacuuming. It also serves as a "companion," equipped with a custom in-house language model that enables natural conversations and body language.

  • Hardware improvements make Neo Gamma quieter and more reliable, with a 10x increase in durability and a 10 dB noise reduction, enhancing its suitability for home environments.

  • It includes four beamforming microphones with echo cancellation for clear audio, a three-speaker system for immersive sound, and "Emotive Ear Rings" that provide real-time feedback for more intuitive communication.

  • Despite its advancements, Neo Gamma remains in the testing phase, with no immediate plans for commercial release due to cost, safety, and technological limitations in the home robotics market.

Why it matters:

1X’s home-first approach with Neo Gamma sets it apart from other humanoid robots designed for industrial use. By prioritizing domestic spaces and focusing on safety and user interaction, 1X aims to position Neo Gamma as a leader in the home robotics market, where the future of robotics is likely to unfold despite current challenges.

SIDE UPDATES

Figure AI has unveiled Helix, an advanced AI model designed to power humanoid robots for performing household tasks via voice commands. Unlike traditional systems, Helix processes both visual data and natural language in real time, eliminating the need for pre-programming. It operates using a dual-brain system, a 7B-parameter language model for understanding commands, and an 80M-parameter controller for precise movements. With control over 35 degrees of freedom, Helix enables robots to grasp, lift, and interact with objects with remarkable accuracy.

Microsoft has introduced Magma, a groundbreaking multimodal AI model that can understand both images and language in digital and physical environments. Unlike traditional vision-language models (VLMs), which focus on image-text pairing, Magma uses spatial intelligence to predict movements, track objects, and perform tasks like navigating applications and controlling robotics based on both textual and visual inputs.

Fiverr has launched Fiverr Go, a platform that enables freelancers—particularly those in voice-over, graphic design, and related fields to train AI models using their work and charge customers for access. To maintain quality, Fiverr is initially limiting participation to its top, vetted freelancers with a proven track record.

With OpenAI's GPT-4.5 (codenamed Orion) and GPT-5 on the horizon, Microsoft is ramping up its server capacity in preparation. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has hinted at a GPT-4.5 launch in the coming weeks, and Microsoft is expected to integrate it as early as next week. Meanwhile, GPT-5 is projected for release in May, aligning with Altman’s previous statements about OpenAI’s next-gen AI rollout.

DeepSeek AI has kicked off its "Open Source Week" by announcing the release of five open-source repositories that provide access to key infrastructure powering its AI services. This move aims to foster transparency, build community trust, and enhance accessibility. The initiative comes at a time when DeepSeek’s mobile app is facing international privacy restrictions, making open-source contributions even more critical for its long-term strategy.

Apple has long indicated that Apple Intelligence would support multiple AI providers, and Google’s Gemini has always been on the shortlist. Now, with Gemini references appearing in Apple’s latest developer beta, it seems the tech giant is moving closer to officially integrating Google’s AI model into its ecosystem.

Grok 3 new Voice Mode

Elon Musk has announced that Grok 3’s voice mode is now available for early testing, allowing users to interact with Grok AI through voice and choose from various personality options.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Users can choose between two AI voices: Ara (upbeat female) and Rex (calm male). The voice mode can sing, express emotions, and handle dynamic conversations, making interactions feel more natural.

  • Grok 3 introduces up to 10 personality modes, including Default, Unhinged (an 18+ uncensored mode), Not a Therapist, Grok ‘Doc’, Conspiracy Theorist, Professor, Sexy, Romantic, and more. Each personality alters the AI’s tone, emotions, and response style.

  • To access the feature, users need to update the Grok app. A new voice icon appears next to the New Conversation button in the top right corner. Clicking it activates voice mode, where users can explore different personalities.

  • Since the feature is still in its early beta phase, occasional glitches like stuttering or unnatural phrasing may occur. However, xAI has promised frequent updates to refine the experience and improve overall voice performance.

  • Currently, the voice feature is exclusive to Premium+ X users or SuperGrok subscribers. However, xAI plans to expand access as the feature is fine-tuned.

Why it matters:

The end goal of this voice mode is to make Grok a more conversational companion, ditching the traditional "type and wait" interactions for a more engaging spoken experience. This update is already drawing positive feedback and positions Grok as a direct competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Voice Mode and Google’s Gemini Live.
