Quick Updates ⚡

1/ OpenAI lost $540M during 2022

OpenAI reportedly incurred a massive loss of $540 million last year while earning only $28 million in 2022 as they developed ChatGPT.

They had to bear the huge costs of recruiting top talents and training advanced language models like GPT-4, which resulted in these losses.

It is estimated that these costs will escalate even further due to increasing AI competition, resulting in more losses. They need more capital to meet rising data costs and train new versions of models.

That's why Open AI CEO Sam Altman expects the company to require $100 billion in funding to achieve its goal of developing AGI.

2/ Google and OpenAI may lose the AI War

From Leaked Document

Someone recently leaked a Google internal document on a public Discord server. It has been confirmed that the document was authored by Luke Sernau, a Google employee.

He wrote in a document that despite investing a large sum of money in generative AI, both Google and OpenAl don't seem to have any significant advantages.

He argued that these open-source models are constantly improving and might surpass those of both companies.

He also suggests that if Google wants to stay relevant, they should work with these open-source communities to come up with new ideas instead of repeating work that's already been done by them.

However, it should be noted that this is just the opinion of a single employee and not the entire firm.

3/ Tim Cook says AI is “huge,” but flags…

Apple doesn't typically share much about its work on AI, but Tim Cook expressed his interest in the potential of AI and called it a “huge thing."

He discussed Apple's deliberate and thoughtful approach to integrating AI into their products, such as the Apple Watch's fall detection and ECG features, which are genuinely helping people in their daily lives.

But what about the generative AI? Sadly, he didn't reveal anything about it.

But Apple's “thoughtful” approach to integrating AI to help people suggests that if they do adopt generative AI, it will likely be used to improve their products rather than for its own sake.
