THROUGH THE VALLEY
OpenAI has opened submissions for third-party apps inside ChatGPT, letting developers publish tools directly on the platform after review and approval. This replaces earlier invite-only experiments and signals a shift toward turning ChatGPT into a full app platform, not just a chatbot. Approved apps appear inside ChatGPT and can be used in conversations without downloads or extensions. These apps must follow OpenAI guidelines and receive approval before becoming available to users. Several apps already show what’s possible, including Photoshop and Canva for design work, Apple Music for creating and saving playlists, Gmail for inbox summaries and drafted replies, and AllTrails for hiking advice based on a large trail database. Together, these apps demonstrate how ChatGPT can move beyond conversation into practical, task-oriented help.
Google is rolling out Gemini 3 Flash, a faster and cheaper AI model that now becomes the default in the Gemini app and Google’s AI-powered search mode. Google says Flash performs much closer to Gemini 3 Pro than earlier versions, with big gains in reasoning, coding, and general knowledge tests. It runs workloads up to three times faster than older models while costing far less than Pro. Gemini 3 Flash is available immediately through the Gemini app, Search AI Mode, and developer platforms like the Gemini API and Vertex AI, meaning free users will see a noticeable upgrade.
DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis says reaching AGI will take more than just scaling today’s models. He argues current systems show “jagged” intelligence, meaning they can outperform humans in some tasks but still fail at basic reasoning, consistency, and self-correction. According to Hassabis, true AGI will need stronger reasoning and planning, better handling of uncertainty, continuous learning, and a deeper understanding of the real world built through advanced simulations. He believes simulations will help study intelligence itself and compare AGI to the human mind. Hassabis expects AGI’s impact to rival the Industrial Revolution, but unfold much faster, forcing major economic and societal changes.
Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman says the push toward AGI is not a race with a single finish line. He argues that once a major breakthrough happens, the ideas and methods spread quickly across labs and countries, making the process non–zero-sum. Suleyman describes AGI and ASI as points along a curve, not a sudden endpoint. While Microsoft is building more powerful systems, he says the bigger priority is safety and control. That includes rejecting AI legal personhood, limiting unchecked self-improvement, and keeping advanced AI firmly aligned with human values and survival.
