THROUGH THE VALLEY

Meta’s AI research team has created TRIBE, a powerful AI model that can guess how your brain reacts while watching a movie, without needing a brain scan. It studies the video, sounds, and dialogue to predict activity in over half of 1,000 brain regions, using data from people who watched 80 hours of TV and films. TRIBE is especially accurate in brain areas that mix sight, sound, and language, and in regions linked to focus, decision-making, and emotions. This could help brain research, but also raises concerns about how it might be used to grab attention.

Apple is reportedly testing a more powerful version of Siri that can perform tasks across different apps using just voice commands. The upgrade builds on Apple’s App Intents framework, which lets developers give Siri access to specific app functions. If successful, users could ask Siri to find and edit a photo, send it to someone, post on social media, or log into a service. Apple is already trialing the feature with apps like Uber, Amazon, YouTube, WhatsApp, and Facebook, with a full Siri overhaul expected in spring 2026.

Nvidia has unveiled new AI models to help build smarter robots, including Cosmos Reason, a 7B-parameter vision-language model that can understand physics and remember past actions to plan what a robot should do next. They also introduced Cosmos Transfer-2 for quickly creating training data from 3D simulations, plus a faster, simplified version. These tools can make text, images, and videos to train AI systems. Nvidia is also adding better 3D world simulation to the popular CARLA platform, updating its Omniverse tools, and offering powerful new servers like the RTX Pro Blackwell and DGX Cloud for running robotics projects.

Microsoft is restructuring GitHub after CEO Thomas Dohmke announced he’s stepping down to start a new company. Instead of replacing him, GitHub’s leadership will now report directly to Microsoft’s CoreAI team, led by former Meta exec Jay Parikh. This move brings GitHub closer to Microsoft’s AI strategy, integrating it into efforts to build AI platforms and tools. Dohmke, who has led GitHub since 2021, will stay until the end of 2025 to help with the transition. GitHub, acquired by Microsoft in 2018 for $7.5B, will now operate without a standalone CEO.

Anthropic has introduced a major personalization upgrade for Claude, shifting it from a generic chatbot into a more adaptive, context-aware AI partner. Competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the enterprise space, Claude now offers four key features: chat history search (to quickly revisit past discussions and continue projects without re-explaining), profile preferences (persistent tone, style, and terminology settings), project instructions (consistent guidance for ongoing work), and custom styles (including tone presets or AI mimicry of uploaded writing samples).

xAI has made Grok 4, its latest AI model, free for all users worldwide, about a month after launch. Previously limited to paid subscribers, the move aims to expand access while keeping its most advanced version, Grok 4 Heavy, for premium users. Grok 4 offers two modes: Auto, which decides when to give more detailed answers, and Expert, which users can switch to for deeper reasoning. xAI also recently released Grok Imagine, a free AI video tool in the US, though it drew controversy over explicit celebrity content. Musk says ads will soon appear in the chatbot to offset GPU costs.
