THROUGH THE VALLEY

Nvidia has officially become the first company in history to cross the $5 trillion market cap, cementing its position as the undisputed leader of the AI era. Just three months ago, the chipmaker hit $4 trillion; it’s already added another trillion since.

Nvidia market cap milestones:

  • Jan 2020: $144 billion

  • May 2023: $1 trillion

  • Feb 2024: $2 trillion

  • Jun 2024: $3 trillion

  • Jul 2025: $4 trillion

  • Oct 2025: $5 trillion

At Wednesday’s market open, Nvidia shares climbed 5.6% to $212.19, with 24.3 billion shares outstanding, putting its total valuation at $5.05 trillion. At a market valuation of roughly $5 trillion, Nvidia’s worth on paper rivals/surpasses the annual economic output (GDP) of major nations like India ($4.3 trillion), Japan ($4.28 trillion), or the UK ($3.8 trillion).

That meteoric rise wasn’t random. Here are a few forces that made Nvidia worth $5 trillion:

  • AI chip monopoly > Nvidia controls 70–95% of the global AI chip market, especially for training large models like ChatGPT and Gemini. Its GPUs (H100, Blackwell) are the industry standard

  • $500 billion in backlog orders > CEO Jensen Huang disclosed that Nvidia has $500 billion in AI chip orders on the books (more than the annual GDP of most countries)

  • $100B OpenAI partnership > Nvidia is investing $100 billion into OpenAI to build 10+ gigawatts of AI datacenters, the largest AI infrastructure deal in history

  • Massive government deals > Nvidia is building seven AI supercomputers for the U.S. Department of Energy and partnering with national labs, cementing itself as critical infrastructure

  • AI is now 80% of market gains > AI-related companies account for 80% of S&P 500 gains in 2025. Nvidia is the largest contributor, single-handedly driving 18.6% of the index’s rise

  • 100,000 robotaxi fleet with Uber > Nvidia and Uber are co-developing a global robotaxi fleet of 100,000 Level-4 autonomous vehicles, starting in 2027

  • Presidential boost > Trump disclosed owning up to $1.3 million in Nvidia shares and told reporters he plans to discuss Nvidia’s chip exports directly with President Xi Jinping this week, a move that could further expand Nvidia’s reach in Asia

Yet some analysts warn of circular economics: Nvidia is effectively financing customers who, in turn, buy more Nvidia chips.

Why does it matter?

Nvidia’s $5T milestone shows how completely AI now drives global markets. Its valuation surpasses every national stock market except those of the US, China, and Japan, but it also raises fears of an AI-fueled asset bubble. Both the Bank of England and IMF have cautioned that inflated AI expectations could trigger a sharp correction.

Meanwhile, according to Reuters, OpenAI is laying the groundwork for a massive IPO at up to $1 trillion valuation by late 2026 / early 2027. And Google has achieved quarterly revenue of $100 billion for the first time in history.
