META AI

📢 Meta Connect 2024 Big AI Announcements

Meta Connect 2024 highlighted exciting advancements in AR and AI, with Zuckerberg announcing new Meta AI updates and launching an open-source model that can handle both images and text.

What has been revealed?

  • Orion AR Glasses: Meta unveiled its first fully holographic AR glasses called Orion, featuring a sleek design similar to traditional eyewear but with advanced capabilities. They track your voice, eyes, and hands to help you interact with the world and offer a holographic display with personalized AI assistance, designed for all-day use.

  • Llama 3.2 model: Meta's Llama 3.2 incorporates new medium-sized vision LLMs (11B and 90B), along with lightweight, text-only models (1B and 3B), that can run on mobile devices. However, its main advantage is its visual capabilities, which makes it useful for VR, robotics, and other applications.

  • Rayban Meta Glasses AI upgrades: The smart glasses now integrate multimodal AI for natural interactions, real-time translation, and memory assistance, while also improving accessibility for visually impaired users.

  • AI-powered translation for Instagram Reels: The feature automatically dubs and lip-syncs content into different languages, allowing creators to reach a wider, global audience.

  • Meta AI Chatbot: It now offers more human-like interactions across various Meta platforms. Users can now engage in voice conversations with Meta AI using celebrity voices such as John Cena, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kristen Bell.

OPENAI

👋 OpenAI CTO Mira Murati Is Leaving

OpenAI is facing a leadership shakeup as three top executives, including Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati, Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew, and VP of Research Barret Zoph, announced their departures. Murati, who played a key role in developing ChatGPT and Dall-E, cited the need for personal exploration in her decision to leave.

These exits follow other notable departures in recent months, leaving CEO Sam Altman without much of his original leadership team as OpenAI undergoes a restructuring.

Is OpenAI losing its edge?

GPT-5 hasn’t dropped, Sora hasn’t shipped, the company had an operating loss of $5b last year, there is no obvious moat, Meta is giving away similar software for free, and many lawsuits are pending.

MULTIMODAL AI

🦾 The Best Open Source AI Model Yet?

The Allen Institute for AI (Ai2) has unveiled the Multimodal Open Language Model (Molmo), a family of four open-source AI models that blend image understanding with conversational skills, set to transform AI agent development.

What makes Molmo special?

Molmo utilizes 1000x less data than current advanced multimodal models while delivering a range of functionalities typically reserved for those systems. It can:

  • Analyze images and participate in chat-based conversations, making it versatile for various AI applications.

  • Help AI agents tackle complex tasks like web browsing, file navigation, and document drafting.

  • The best part is that the Molmo-1B variant is tiny, fast, and fits on most devices, including smartphones.

How good is it?

The flagship version, featuring 70B parameters, outperformed GPT-4o, Gemini 1.5 Pro, and Claude 3.5 across 11 benchmarks, especially excelling in understanding images, charts, and documents.

You can test the model from here.
