Most of the futures we get shown are the ones falling apart. That is a failure of imagination with real consequences, because the futures we picture are the ones we end up building. So we put $5.5M behind the other kind.

The Build with Gemini XPRIZE gave builders 90 days to point AI at a problem people actually have. $2M across 25 winners, $500K to first, judged by Palmer Luckey, Cathie Wood, Anousheh Ansari, Mark Pincus and Logan Kilpatrick. Revenue was the proof it worked, not the point.

The same night a film gets greenlit for a $2.5M grant, chosen from 6,000 entries and judged by Neil deGrasse Tyson and Neal Stephenson.

More than 30,000 people competed. Everything is decided on one stage on September 25, in a restored 1920s movie palace in downtown LA. Nothing pre-recorded. 1,500 seats.

THROUGH THE VALLEY

1/ AI video is now fast enough to make infinite livestreams - fal’s H3 Max can generate 15 seconds of video in roughly 9 seconds, which is faster than the video can play. Rehan Sheikh hooked it up to a livestream and made an “infinite interdimensional cable” where the AI just keeps generating the next scene.

Then Pieter Levels built Infinite Slop where you can type something into the chat and AI generates it into the next part of the stream. 37,000 people watched on day one.

The interesting bit is that video can now be generated while you’re watching it. Instead of making a finished piece of media and then distributing it, the media itself can keep changing based on what the audience does. You make the movie, song or video first, then people watch it. Now the thing itself can keep generating, responding and changing based on the audience.

Feels like we’re getting the first glimpse of media becoming less like a file and more like a living thing.

2/ John Ternus is taking over Apple, and AI is the big test - Ternus becomes CEO tomorrow, taking over from Tim Cook after 15 years. Cook isn’t really going anywhere though. He’ll stay as executive chairman and keep handling relationships with Trump and China while Ternus gets to deal with the fun stuff.

He’s coming in with a pretty wild product roadmap: a foldable iPhone, a new home display, smart glasses, camera-equipped AirPods and more. A lot of it depends on Apple finally getting its AI stuff working properly.

Apple has fallen behind in AI, so the big test is the new Siri. Apple is using Google’s Gemini as the foundation after struggling with its own models, and the new version is supposed to finally make Siri actually useful.

Ternus also wants to use AI internally to speed up product development and testing. So yeah, the next few years at Apple are going to be pretty interesting.

3/ Anthropic wants AI agents to operate real-world hardware - Anthropic and HHMI Janelia released a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard, a common interface that lets AI agents work with things like microscopes, lab robots and quantum equipment.

The coolest example is QuEra. Claude used MHS to build a laser recovery script that successfully restored the laser lock in 695 of 700 tests, or 99.3%. The script then runs without Claude needing to stay in the loop.

MHS is basically trying to do for physical hardware what APIs did for software. Instead of building a custom integration for every machine, agents get a standard way to discover and control them.

Still early, and Claude needs human oversight for physical problems. But this feels like an important step toward agents that can actually do things in the real world.
