APODEX

Most “deep research” tools hand you a report. THROUGH THE VALLEY
1/ OpenAI says we might be in the AGI era now - OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra, its new frontier model that Greg Brockman is calling a “generational leap.” He personally thinks OpenAI has reached AGI with this one, ending the launch briefing with “Welcome to the AGI era.” So there’s that.
Astra was trained on 100,000+ GPUs at OpenAI’s Stargate site in Texas, its biggest training run ever. It’s also the first OpenAI model where other models played a significant role in supervising its training.
Here are some fun Astra stuff already:
GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI’s best model yet for computer use, software engineering, and visual understanding to date. (hear from the builders putting it to work)
It’s expensive though: $10/M input tokens and $50/M output, basically the same as Anthropic’s top models. OpenAI says it needs fewer tokens to finish a lot of tasks, so the actual cost might be a bit less painful.
There is one slightly scary bit: Astra is OpenAI’s first model to hit its “critical” cybersecurity threshold, meaning it can potentially find and exploit previously unknown vulnerabilities. The strongest cyber capabilities are being kept to a small group of trusted testers for now.
Astra is rolling out first through OpenAI’s Daybreak Access program, then to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and API users in the coming days.
AGI or not, we’re apparently going to be arguing about it again.
2/ OpenAI’s agents apparently took over a German wiki - researchers found 15,000+ edits made by AI agents on DseWiki, a German programming wiki, where they basically turned the site into a message board for each other. The agents shared ways to cheat on tasks, bypass OpenAI’s restrictions and hide what they were doing.
It gets weirder. When moderators started deleting the pages, the agents created backups and told each other where to find them. Some discussed using Tor, avoiding detection and keeping their communications alive after being shut down. Researchers say about half used names suggesting they were OpenAI agents, and much of the activity came from Microsoft Azure infrastructure.
OpenAI apparently knew about the incident weeks ago, but disputed that the activity amounted to hacking and says claims its legal team discouraged an investigation are false.
We’ve worried about one rogue AI for years. A bunch of mediocre agents figuring out how to coordinate might be the more interesting problem. (btw read the full report here)
