PEAK OF THE DAY
GPT-5 learns from you
After almost 3 years and many billions spent (over half a trillion industry-wide), GPT-5 shows progress but remains part of the pack, not a giant leap forward (e.g., Grok 4 beats it on ARC-AGI-2 results).
Here’s what you need to know:
GPT-5 has three specialized versions: GPT-5 Pro, GPT-5 mini, and GPT-5 nano, calling it the company’s “best AI system yet.”
GPT-5 combines multiple AI approaches: a fast general model, a deeper "GPT-5 Thinking" mode for tough problems, and a real-time router that picks the best method based on conversation type.
It learns from users. If you often switch to "Thinking," it starts routing harder queries there automatically.
GPT-5 replaced GPT-4o, GPT-4.5, and earlier versions, ending the confusing mix of choices.
Like GPT-4o, GPT-5 is multimodal, supporting text, image, and voice interactions.
With web search enabled, GPT-5’s responses are about 45% less likely to contain factual errors than GPT-4o.
Fewer hallucinations (26% drop) make GPT-5 more reliable for research.
The models will roll out across all ChatGPT tiers, including free users, with improved accuracy, coding capabilities, and a new "safe completions" feature for handling sensitive requests.
User concerns and controversies:
The biggest complaint is GPT-5 replacing all previous models, removing user choice. Instead of selecting GPT-4o for creativity or OpenAI o3 for logic, GPT-5’s auto-router decides. Many users are unhappy, with some on r/ChatGPT calling it a cost-cutting move. Reports claim:
Shorter, less detailed answers requiring follow-up prompts, burning through usage limits faster.
Auto-router allegedly favors less compute-intensive models even when inappropriate.
What’s the benchmark reality check?
Coding: 74.9% on SWE-bench (vs. Claude Opus 4.1’s 74.5%).
Math & Reasoning: 94.6% on AIME 2025, 88.4% on GPQA (with "Thinking" mode).
Long-Context Performance: 400K tokens (vs. Claude’s 200K), with fewer hallucinations.
Why it matters:
GPT-5 signals a shift in AI’s evolution: progress through refinement, not revolution. While benchmarks show incremental gains, the real win is accessibility. Cheaper models (from $0.05 per million tokens) make AI more available to developers and casual users. This aligns with the Jevons Paradox, where lower costs could drive explosive adoption. However, the AGI hype faces reality checks. Fundraising may slow as investors focus on real-world utility over moonshots. For now, GPT-5 strengthens OpenAI’s market lead, proving AI’s future lies in practical applications, not just raw power.

THROUGH THE VALLEY
Google DeepMind has open-sourced an upgraded version of Perch, an AI model that helps scientists analyze massive wildlife audio datasets. With double the training data from its 2023 version, it can now identify species across environments like forests and coral reefs. The model includes tools that detect rare species and reduce hours of manual work. This advancement is already accelerating efforts like bird tracking in Australia and Hawaii, showing how AI can boost conservation before species vanish.
Amazon’s self-driving taxi company, Zoox, just got approval from U.S. regulators to test its unique driverless pods that have no steering wheel or pedals. The exemption covers 64 vehicles and allows them to be used for demos, not for commercial rides. Zoox had self-certified its safety in 2022, but regulators found issues and launched a probe. The exemption clears that up, though future vehicles aren’t covered yet. Zoox now plans to build more taxis at its California factory.
