THROUGH THE VALLEY
1/ Google wants AI to replace clicking and typing

Ahead of I/O, Google unveiled new Gemini-powered products and features, including AI-native “Googlebook” laptops, a cross-device Gemini Intelligence system for Android, and a new AI-powered cursor called Magic Pointer.
The feature lets users point at something on screen while Gemini understands the surrounding context and responds to voice commands directly.
For example:
Point at a building in a video → “show me the route”
Point at a date in an email → create a meeting
Point at a table → turn it into a chart
The system works across Chrome, Android apps, and Google services without requiring users to constantly open chat windows or write detailed prompts.
Google also announced AI-assisted dictation, auto-browsing in Chrome, and AI-generated widgets.
Why this matters:
Since the mouse pointer was introduced in the 1960s, computers have mostly required users to manually translate intent into clicks, menus, and typed commands. Google is trying to make the interface itself understand context. Instead of prompting AI separately, users simply interact with what’s already on screen. If this works well, it could start shifting AI away from chatbot interfaces and toward systems that quietly operate in the background.
2/ Thinking Machines is building AI that reacts in real time
Thinking Machines, the lab founded by Mira Murati, introduced new interaction models designed for continuous real-time collaboration across audio, video, and text.
Instead of waiting for users to finish speaking, the system processes conversations in tiny 200ms chunks, allowing it to interrupt naturally, react to visual context, and continue interacting while deeper reasoning happens separately in the background.
The company says the models are built for environments like coding, tutoring, support, robotics, and operations, where humans constantly change direction mid-conversation and rarely communicate in perfectly structured prompts.
Why this matters:
Most AI still works like messaging software: type something, wait, get a response. Human collaboration doesn’t work that way.
Thinking Machines is betting the next shift in AI is not just better intelligence, but better interaction. If these systems improve, AI could start feeling less like using software and more like working alongside something that can listen, react, and stay present in real time.
