THROUGH THE VALLEY

1/ Google is turning Gemini into a persistent operating layer

Google appears to be preparing "Gemini Spark" ahead of I/O, based on onboarding screens discovered inside the Gemini web app.

Unlike conventional chatbots that wait for prompts, Spark is designed to run persistently in the background. It can access browsing sessions, connected apps, scheduled tasks, ongoing chats, and location data to complete actions proactively. Leaked details suggest it can also maintain browser sessions across websites, allowing it to continue multi-step tasks without users repeatedly authenticating or re-entering instructions.

The deeper issue: The company operating this layer stops being a search engine you visit and becomes an infrastructure you live inside. It sees how you work, what you click, what you buy, who you talk to, which tasks repeat. That behavioral context compounds silently. Over time, it becomes a moat no competitor can cross—not because of technology, but because of accumulated memory they do not have.

2/ Xynova unveils a robotic hand built for delicate physical tasks

Xynova introduced Flex 2, a robotic hand built for humanoid robots and fine manipulation. The hand features 23 degrees of freedom and sensing systems that detect slipping objects and adjust grip force in real time. The company targets tasks involving fragile objects, tools, irregular shapes, and environments where precision errors carry real costs.

What this actually changes: Locomotion attracts attention, but manipulation determines utility. Humans experience the world primarily through their hands; the same will likely hold for humanoid robots. A robot becomes broadly useful only when it can grip, adjust, recover from slippage, and handle unpredictable objects without damage. Flex 2 addresses the capability gap that keeps most robots in warehouses instead of kitchens, clinics, and homes.

3/ OpenAI and Apple’s AI partnership is reportedly starting to crack

OpenAI is reportedly considering legal action against Apple over their ChatGPT-Siri integration, as tensions between the companies escalate. The original deal allowed Siri to route complex queries to ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence. OpenAI expected this to drive significant subscription growth, but many users continued opening the standalone ChatGPT app instead. Meanwhile, Apple is preparing to open Siri to additional AI providers including Claude and Gemini in future iOS releases.

The structural tension: Apple wants multiple AI providers inside its ecosystem without ceding control to any single one. OpenAI increasingly wants direct user relationships rather than existing behind another company's interface. That conflict will intensify as AI becomes more central to device usage. The partnership was always a temporary arrangement between two companies with incompatible long-term interests. The current friction suggests both sides are now acknowledging it.
