OpenAI rolls out Canvas to all ChatGPT users
OpenAI has made its Canvas feature available to all ChatGPT users, moving it from its previous exclusive status for paid subscribers. This update, announced during the "12 Days of OpenAI" live stream, brings a more dynamic and efficient interface for content creation and editing.
What is Canvas?
Canvas transforms ChatGPT into a dual-pane layout:
Left Sidebar: The traditional conversation with ChatGPT.
Right Workspace: Real-time editing of your content, where changes are instantly reflected.
Canvas, integrated with GPT-4, offers the following:
Writing: Suggest edits, adjust length, change reading level, and add emojis for emphasis.
Coding: Add logs, fix bugs, port code to different languages, and review code for improvements.
Real-Time Editing: Edit text or code directly with instant feedback.
Python Code Execution: Execute and debug Python code, with automatic suggestions for fixes.
Custom GPT Integration: Default for custom GPTs, with the option to toggle on or off.
Why it matters:
This update takes ChatGPT to the next level by streamlining workflows and making content creation, data analysis, and code experimentation smoother and more efficient. With real-time feedback and quick edits, Canvas enhances both productivity and creativity, appealing to everyone from hobbyists to professionals.

SIDE UPDATES
Cognition Labs has introduced Devin, an AI-powered assistant designed to streamline development workflows by automating tasks like bug fixes, pull request creation, and codebase refactoring. Integrated with Slack, GitHub, and IDEs, Devin helps engineering teams assign tasks with simple Slack tags and track progress. At $500/month, it allows teams to focus on higher-priority work. Devin's earlier success, such as autonomously opening support tickets and adjusting its code, marks a shift toward more efficient, collaborative development.
Amazon has launched Amazon Autos, an e-commerce platform allowing customers to browse, order, and buy new cars, trucks, and SUVs directly from dealerships. Initially available in 48 U.S. cities with Hyundai, it offers features like financing, e-signing paperwork, and trade-ins. While only new cars are available for purchase, Amazon plans to expand its services, including more cities, auto manufacturers, and leasing options in 2025.
Cruise, the autonomous vehicle company, will be absorbed into General Motors (GM) as GM ends its funding for Cruise’s robotaxi efforts. GM plans to integrate Cruise with its driver assistance and fully autonomous vehicle development. Many Cruise employees were caught off guard by the news, as they were working towards launching a driverless service in Houston by 2025. The future of employee jobs remains unclear.
At the GenerationAI Conference in Paris, OpenAI showcased a GPT-4o-powered AI agent that handled complex customer service tasks, such as resolving a Galaxy S23 return by analyzing policies and offering solutions. The agent also suggested product alternatives and coordinated in real time with stores. OpenAI launched the full version of o1 and a $200 ChatGPT Pro plan, granting access to advanced features like unlimited o1 use and voice capabilities.
Recorded Future revealed that ElevenLabs’ AI voice tech was used by the Russian group Social Design Agency in a disinformation campaign, Operation Undercut, aimed at undermining European support for Ukraine. The campaign spread misleading videos about Ukrainian politicians and military aid. Although the AI-generated content was sophisticated, it had minimal impact on public opinion. The Social Design Agency, sanctioned for fake news activities, is believed to be backed by the Russian government.
Apple's latest updates with iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 introduce several new AI features, including ChatGPT integration, writing tool enhancements, and the Image Playground.
Key highlights:
ChatGPT integration: Siri can now use ChatGPT for questions it can’t answer, with customizable writing tools to help generate text based on prompts.
Writing tools: New features allow users to describe desired changes for more tailored text editing.
Image Playground: Create AI-powered images or remixes, with style options like animation and illustration, integrated into apps like Messages.
Genmoji: Customize emojis by describing them or using photos from your library.
Visual Intelligence: The iPhone 16 can now recognize objects and provide context through Google or ChatGPT search.
Notes app: The Image Wand turns sketches into images automatically.
Apple is also expanding language support and offering developers access to AI APIs for future app integration.
