🦾 Boston Dynamics unveils new generation of Atlas

A day after announcing it was retiring Atlas, Boston Dynamics has introduced a new, all-electric version of its humanoid machine.

Here’s the reveal video (with dune music).

The new version of the robot is virtually unrecognizable. As the camera pans around the robot’s back, its legs bend at the knees. It’s a natural movement before crossing into an uncanny realm is something out of a Sam Raimi movie.

This is such a great engineering feat to accomplish:

• This new robot surpasses the previous Atlas in strength and boasts a wider range of motion. Gone are the top-heavy torso, the bowed legs, and the plated armor.

• There are no exposed cables anywhere to be found on the svelte new mechanical skeleton. 

• The pace is fast, but the steps are still a bit jerky, though significantly better than many of the new commercial humanoids to which we’ve been introduced over the past couple of years.

Atlas was honestly adorable, but I find this one to be quite intimidating.

👀 Microsoft just revealed VASA-1

Just around the time of the elections, Microsoft researchers developed a powerful new AI model called VASA-1 that can generate stunningly realistic deepfake videos of talking faces from just a single image and an audio clip. 

What does it do?

• Precise lip-audio synchronization: VASA-1 excels at generating lip movements that are exquisitely synchronized with the input speech audio, ensuring a seamless and natural-looking experience.

• Lifelike facial nuances and head motions: It captures various facial expressions, emotions, and head movements, and lets users control different aspects such as main eye gaze direction, head distance, emotion offsets, and more.

• Real-time generation and high video quality: It supports high-resolution (512x512) videos at up to 40 frames per second (FPS) with negligible starting latency, enabling real-time engagements with lifelike avatars.
