Anthropic and OpenAI shipped new models on the same day... and they’re not really playing the same game - Claude Opus 5.5 is now #1 on Artificial Analysis’ Intelligence Index at 58, vs 53 for Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra. It leads 6/10 evaluations and is particularly good at the long, annoying knowledge work agents are supposed to eventually do.

It’s cheaper too. Opus 5.5 is $4/$20 per million input/output tokens, with Anthropic saying typical workloads cost ~40% less than Opus 5.

OpenAI went in a slightly different direction. GPT-6 Sol isn’t the smartest model, Astra is still its flagship, but Sol is $2/$10, 50% cheaper than 5.6 Sol. GPT-6 Luna is kinda ridiculous at $0.10/$0.50.

And the early tests show where this gets interesting. Nate Herk preferred Opus on most of his usable real-world tasks, but it took 8h40 and ~$213 vs Sol’s 5h51 and ~$74. Browser Use got the opposite result, with Sol beating Opus 66.9 to 59.4 while costing ~3.5x less.

So Anthropic seems to still be chasing the intelligence frontier. OpenAI seems more interested in making very smart models fast and stupidly cheap to actually use.That’s a pretty interesting split.
