AMAZON
Amazon unveils AI chip 'Trainium 2’ to rival Nvidia 💾
Amazon is set to launch its "Trainium 2" chip next month as part of its strategy to reduce reliance on Nvidia and strengthen its position in the AI hardware market.
Here's what you need to know:
The chip is developed by Annapurna Labs, which Amazon acquired in 2015 for $350 million to support its in-house chip efforts.
Trainium 2 is currently being tested by Anthropic, which has received $4 billion in Amazon backing, along with Databricks, Deutsche Telekom, Ricoh, and Stockmark.
Amazon expects to invest around $75 billion in 2024 on cloud AI infrastructure, up from $48.4 billion in 2023, with even higher spending anticipated in 2025.
Amazon is also investing $110 million to support university AI research using Trainium, offering free cloud credits to researchers to encourage use of its chips over Nvidia’s.
Why it matters:
By investing heavily in custom AI hardware, Amazon aims to take more control over its infrastructure, boost its cloud and AI capabilities, and stay competitive as AI demand continues to rise.

BAIDU
Baidu unveils LLM based AI glasses to rival Meta 👓️
On Tuesday, Baidu unveiled its Xiaodu AI glasses, the first to connect with a native Chinese language model, set for launch in early 2025.
Here's what you need to know:
The glasses are powered by Baidu's Ernie AI model and allow users to track calories, ask questions, play music, and record videos—all through voice commands.
The Xiaodu AI Glasses provide 56 hours of standby, 5+ hours of audio playback, and charge fully in just 30 minutes, making them ideal for daily use.
Baidu also introduced iRAG, an AI tool designed to reduce inaccuracies or "hallucinations" in images generated by AI, making them more reliable and realistic.
Plus, they launched "MiaoDa," a no-code tool that enables users to create complex applications by simply describing their ideas in natural language.
Why it matters:
Baidu's Xiaodu AI glasses offer a local alternative to Meta and Snap AI devices, filling the gap in China where Western smart glasses face limitations due to server restrictions and lack of support.
