THROUGH THE VALLEY
💻 Apple, Anthropic said to partner on AI-powered “vibe-coding” platform
Apple and Anthropic are working on a new AI coding tool based on Xcode, powered by Claude Sonnet, according to Bloomberg. The platform will help write, edit, and test code, and is currently planned for internal use. Apple is also partnering with OpenAI and possibly Google to boost its broader AI strategy. Claude has already gained traction among developers using coding tools like Cursor and Windsurf.
🎮 Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro just completed Pokémon Blue
Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro just completed Pokémon Blue — a 1996 GameBoy game — marking a milestone for AI agents. It was run by an independent developer who fed Gemini game screenshots with extra data. Gemini used that to decide moves, call tools, and press buttons — no walkthroughs, just reasoning. Claude AI is still trying to finish Pokémon Red. It’s not a benchmark, but it shows how fast AI agents are getting at solving complex, open-ended tasks.
📊 OpenAI's ChatGPT just surpassed Elon Musk's X in terms of website visits in April
ChatGPT just passed X in global pageviews — 4.8 billion vs. 4 billion in the past 28 days, according to Similarweb. OpenAI’s rapid feature rollout, especially GPT-4o’s viral image generation, helped drive the spike. This shift comes as OpenAI explores building its own social network. Meanwhile, X is now part of Musk’s xAI Holdings and is integrating more AI tools like Grok to stay in the race.
💰 Cursor maker Anysphere said to have raised $900M at $9B valuation
Anysphere, the company behind AI coding tool Cursor, is reportedly raising $900 million at a $9 billion valuation, per FT. Thrive Capital is leading the round, with a16z and Accel joining in. That’s a sharp jump from its $2.5 billion valuation in December. Investors are rushing in as AI coding tools heat up — even OpenAI was eyeing rival Windsurf at a similar $3 billion valuation.
✂️ Some unemployment due to AI is coming
AI is replacing workers across major companies. Klarna, UPS, Duolingo, Intuit, and Cisco have all cut jobs while ramping up automation. Klarna’s AI now handles work equal to 700 staff. UPS laid off 20,000 as it automates logistics and sales. Duolingo dropped contractors for AI-powered translations. Intuit is using layoff savings to invest in AI. Cisco cut 5,900 jobs while shifting focus to AI and cybersecurity. The AI wave is here — and it's cutting headcount.
😨 Actors horrified as they learn what selling their faces as AI actually means
Actors are now facing serious fallout after selling their image rights to AI companies. Some, like Simon Lee, found their likeness used in fake health ads. Others, like Connor Yeates, ended up in political propaganda — including a video supporting a foreign coup. Many signed vague, one-time contracts out of desperation, giving companies full control over their face and voice. Without strong protections, AI firms are exploiting cheap, non-union labor with little accountability.
PEAK OF THE DAY
🏁 Sam Altman and Elon Musk are racing to build an ‘everything app’
Sam Altman and Elon Musk are no longer just battling in AI — they both want to build the “everything app” that blends finance, social, crypto, and identity.
What is Altman building?
Altman’s company, Tools for Humanity, is behind Worldcoin and the World App — a crypto wallet, chat platform, and app store powered by iris-scanning for identity.
How big is World App now?
26 million monthly active users
12 million verified with an Orb scan
Available in over 160 countries
7,500 Orbs planned for rollout in the U.S. this year
The platform has doubled its user base in six months and is already used in retail, gaming, and DeFi-style services.
How does it work?
You scan your eyes at an orb in a retail store to get a World ID. That lets you access the app, send crypto, chat with others, and use mini apps tied to your ID.
What’s the endgame?
World App aims to become a bot-free hub for identity, payments, and communication. The team recently announced a partnership with Visa to launch a U.S. debit card that connects to Worldcoin and offers rewards for AI services.
What is Musk building?
Musk’s X is also evolving into a super app. His plan includes:
Built-in payments (via partnerships with Visa and Stripe)
Grok, an AI chatbot integrated into the app
Future tools for shopping, job applications, and even banking
Last month, X was merged into xAI Holdings, Musk’s new AI company, to align social media, identity, and generative AI under one umbrella.
How are they different?
Altman is focused on verified identity + crypto + mini apps, with a strong emphasis on global scale and decentralization.
Musk is building AI-powered social + payments, with tight vertical integration and U.S. rollout first.
Both want to solve the bot problem, monetize attention, and own the next generation of consumer internet.
Why does this matter?
This is more than a product race. Whoever wins could control a massive share of digital identity, payments, and content. With AGI on the horizon, these apps may become the interface between humans and machines.

I recently made this plot for a talk I gave on AI progress and it helped me appreciate how quickly AI models are improving.
I know there's still a lot of benchmarks where progress is flat, but progress on Codeforces was quite flat for a long time too.
