THROUGH THE VALLEY

Ads shown on ChatGPT

OpenAI is internally testing ads inside ChatGPT, according to new strings found in the Android beta that mention a search ad, a carousel, and “bazaar content.” Until now, ChatGPT has never shown ads, even with its paid plans, but this move could reshape the web economy. Because GPT understands user intent better than traditional search, ads inside the chat could be far more personalized. Early signs suggest ads will appear only in search results. ChatGPT now sees about 800 million weekly users and handles roughly 2.5 billion prompts a day. According to some users, they are already getting ads inside ChatGPT.

A new MIT study says AI is already capable of replacing about 11.7% of U.S. jobs, covering roughly $1.2 trillion in wages. Researchers analyzed 151 million workers and found high exposure not only in tech but also in HR, finance, logistics and admin roles. Other reports echo the trend: McKinsey estimates AI could automate 57% of U.S. work hours, and Microsoft flagged jobs like sales reps, writers and translators as highly exposed. Companies are already cutting staff, while worker anxiety is rising, with more than half fearing displacement.

Andrej Karpathy has released LLM Council, a small framework that lets multiple language models debate, critique, and merge answers under a single “Chairman.” It uses FastAPI, React, JSON storage, and OpenRouter, and supports models like GPT-5.1, Gemini 3, Claude Opus 4.5, and Grok 4 as interchangeable parts. The project shows that running several frontier models together is possible, but also underscores why real platforms still matter, since orchestration and safety tools are missing. Karpathy is also pushing AI education through Eureka Labs, promoting classrooms where students use AI but still learn to think on their own.

Google is now selling its TPUv7 chips to outside customers after years of keeping them internal, and Anthropic plans to buy more than one million units. Other buyers include Meta, SSI, xAI, and possibly OpenAI. Early analysis shows TPU systems can cut training and inference costs by 30 to 60 percent compared to Nvidia’s newest GPUs, mainly due to lower chip prices and more efficient designs. Large TPU orders could pressure Nvidia to lower prices, change financing deals, and open the door for new data-center providers and cheaper AI development overall.
