PLUS: Microsoft kills Cortana to develop more advanced AI

Howdy, Welcome to our Latest Newsletter

Today we’ll talk about how Researchers successfully steal data using keyboard sound, Microsoft killing its virtual assistant, and more…

Researchers at Cornell University have developed a technique to steal data by listening to keyboard sound with high accuracy.

What you need to know:

  • Researchers tested the method by repeatedly pressing laptop keys and recording the Keyboard typing sounds using the microphone.

  • Then, they trained the AI to associate each recorded sound with a specific key by identifying patterns.

  • They found that the AI model predicted typed text with up to 95% accuracy using recorded keystrokes, even achieving 93% accuracy when using Zoom to record the sounds.

  • This attack can leak sensitive information like passwords and discussions.

  • To prevent this attack, researchers suggest changing typing styles, using noise-producing software, and considering biometric authentication or password managers.

Microsoft is shutting down its digital assistant Cortana this month as they're focusing on more advanced AI technologies for the future.

What you need to know:

  • Microsoft thinks Cortana was like a stepping stone toward a new AI future. They're planning to use even smarter chatbots, sort of like GPT-4, and also putting improved Bing chat right into Windows 11.

  • During this transition, Cortana will still be available in some forms, but not as a standalone app. It will continue to work in Outlook mobile, Teams mobile, Microsoft Teams display, and Microsoft Teams rooms.
